1938 - "William Robert McKay" made application for a Social Security card on April 6, 1938. His home address is Creve Coeur, Route 1; his age is 54; he wrote "November 7, 1883" as his birthdate and there is no explanation for the discrepancy with "November 7, 1882"; he is shown as being unemployed, although "Alton Brick Co." has been lined through; his father is shown as "William McKay" and his mother's maiden name is "Amelia Tigert."

William Robert McKay, the youngest and last surviving child of William and Amelia McKay, died in St. Louis, Missouri in February 1973 at age 90.

McKay Family Origins

After establishing that James M. McKay was the owner and very probable father of William McKay, I began searching for James McKay's family origins. As stated earlier, he came to Missouri most likely in 1831 from Frederick County, Virginia along with his sister, Edith McKay and brother, John Green McKay. Edith was born about 1795; James was born about 1801; and John was born about 1814. I learned that their father was Asa McKay, who was born about 1766 and lived in Middletown, Frederick County, Virginia.

Frederick County is located in the Shenandoah Valley, about 70 miles west of Washington D.C., in the northwest corner of Virginia, near the borders of West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

While researching Asa McKay, I discovered a web site and forum called "Robert MacKay Clan." The creator and host of this web site is Michael McKay of Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. The site allows interested visitors to read and/or post messages and information concerning the family and descendants of Robert MacKay Sr. The web site also includes dozens of pages of histories, wills, deeds, photographs, maps and McKay family indexes. Much of the historical information, wills and deeds were provided by Dee Ann Buck of Fairfax, Virginia. Dee Ann Buck is Michael McKay's 4th cousin and she is a family history researcher and genealogist who has published many books and reference materials on the MacKay family as well as abstracts of deed and will books representing
